3 Factors to Consider Before Outsourcing Component Testing

Embedded Advisor | Thursday, September 24, 2020

As the demand for quality products increases across the electronics devices industry, manufacturers look to outsource testing to ensure a product’s safety and efficacy.

FREMONT, CA: Many electronics device manufacturers today are revisiting their decision to bring component testing and measurement in-house. Some of the companies own legacy testing and measurement equipment and are busy analyzing the deciding on outsourcing.  As quality and time are as important as return on investment, reviewing the impact of outsourcing on quality control and timeliness stands significant. With this, testing outsourcing can be better understood, and a blueprint for gaining cost efficiencies can be made. Here is the checklist for selecting a strategic testing partner.

• Quality

Component testing represents a vital threshold in the electronics device manufacturing process. Specific, clear, and relevant component quality testing has a tremendous impact on overall product quality. What is being tested, how quality is defined for specific products, and overall business strategies must be considered when deciding to outsource testing functions. Quality consideration also includes regulatory requirements such as ASTM standards. Meeting these benchmarks is vital.

• Time Factor

Time is an important factor in testing as it involves knowing the limits before product and service quality decline and the turnaround providing the greatest efficiencies in quality and cost. Turnaround speed for getting test results is the most vital criterion to look for while choosing a testing partner. Delays in testing create production bottlenecks, or it can be said that testing speed impacts the ability to fill orders in a timely manner. When combined with quality issues, time factors should steer the electronic component testing outsourcing debate.

• Cost Consideration

Cost scenario is an important factor in revisiting the decision-making around outsourced testing. The cost checklist begins with a simple question: How vital is it to save money in meeting testing needs? To answer this question, viewing through the lens of quality and time factors, and the advances in functionality becomes the key.

Electronics device manufacturers must test components. The challenge lies in identifying the right partner. The above blueprint can help manufacturers look for optimal testing quality that meets their strategic business goals.
