Although embedded systems add advanced functionalities to flights, it is essential to focus on the reliability of sensors.
FREMONT, CA: Flights have been revolutionary in bringing the world closer. Now, embedded systems are delivering a brand new set of features to make flights even more advanced. Just like how automation has become the most significant trend in the automotive industry, the aviation industry is also trying to develop self-flying planes. Sensors will play the central role here as well. As of now, commercial airplanes are already using a host of sensors. However, a spate of fatal accidents in recent years has been enough to cast shadows on the reliability of sensors. Thus, the aviation industry needs to rethink ways to instill safety into sensor-driven functions. A few ways in which this can be attained are discussed here.
• Increasing the Number of Sensors
When a sensor that makes critical measurements malfunctions mid-flight, it can turn out to be fatal. Today, pilots depend on the sensors when they are in control of the aircraft. Besides, the autopilot modes are also linked to the embedded systems. Thus, aircraft manufacturers and engineers should make it a point to provide at least two sensors for every critical mechanism. Even when one sensor is not consistent, the other one will be effective.
• Introducing Solutions to Re-examine Sensor Data
A single mistake in reading metrics can endanger several lives. Thus, in addition to embedded systems involved in smart sensors, airplanes should have in place technologies that facilitate the cross-checking of sensor-generated data. Advanced solutions that can validate the fact that planes are flying safely by combining the data from a set of sensors are vital. When information is derived indirectly from a set of references, the chances of inaccuracies are fewer.
• Enabling Embedded Analytics Solutions
Flight data analytics can be of significant value in making embedded systems safer. When solutions can process information in real-time and communicate the same to pilots, controllers, and other planes, the chances of accidents reduce. Embedded analytics solutions add layers of reliability to sensors.
Concerns regarding the reliability of sensors in flights are valid. However, the right approach can make flying safer and reduce the impact of faulty sensors.
