Governments around the world and city-states are making rapid strides in changing the infrastructure in their major metropolitan centers. All this is changing people preference, which has forced automakers around the world to change their strategy. Cars are becoming smart just like our mobile device, and with cities transforming to smart cities, automotive industries will have to change the way they manufacture cars. The change will not stop there since cities will be semi and fully automated with introducing new technology.
Tesla is at the forefront of the fuel efficiency movement, releasing a range of electric and hybrid vehicles with a single charge that can take you hundreds of miles. More than two million electric vehicles were sold worldwide in 2016, and this figure is expected to increase soon as more car manufacturers use electric vehicle technology. Companies like VW and General Motors recently unveiled electric vehicles to their fleet, while Volvo said that by 2019, all the engines they manufacture would have an electric motor.
In the future of the automotive industry, AI and ML will play an essential role as predictive capabilities in cars will become more prevalent, and driving experience more personalized. More manufacturers use algorithms that use data to automate the vehicle configuration process, including the infotainment system of a car and its application preferences. Vehicles become IoT devices that can connect to smartphones and take voice commands and change the interface of the users.
Much has been done with autonomous driving technology, and while some companies have tested their self-driving features on open roads, the world is still a long way from adopting these vehicles widely. In the form of driver-assisted technology, several cars already have semi-autonomous capabilities. These include automatic braking sensors, lane sensors on the motorway, mapping technology that monitors blind spots, rear and front cameras, adaptive cruise control and self- parking capabilities.
Cars-as-a-service ( CaaS) car rental service will enable city drivers to ride with one another. Smart device owners can use an app to pick up a car with driverless technology for transport or delivery. What’s noteworthy is that there is no need for a driver’s license to access one of these vehicles, which serves as an Uber. The roadmap for digitalization in the automotive industry is expected to race from “digital services” to “car- as- a- service” to “mobility- as- a- service” by 2030.
